Pressure ulcers are caused by staying in one position for too long. Commonly form where the bones are closest to the skin, such as the ankles, heels and hips. The risk is higher if you are confined to a bed, use a wheelchair or can not change position. Pressure ulcers can cause serious infections, some of which can be life threatening.
To prevent ulcers: Keep the skin clean and dry; change position every two hours, use orthopedic pillows, cushions, mattresses, sheets, heel boots, … ortopedic products that relieve pressure.
